link_etta_viarGrieve not for me for now I know where I am. This is the day the Lord hath made, let us rejoice and be glad in it. Etta Viar (Granny Link) Link 104, departed this life at her home in Newport, Va., on Thursday, November 12, 2009.

She was a daughter of the late Mundy R. and Sallie Ann Page Viar. She was born in Nelson County, Va., on October 25, 1905. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Link ,of 51 years; daughter, Lois; granddaughter, Debra Porterfield; daughter-in-law, Reba Link; and sisters, Gladys Viar and Eva Breen; and brother, Basil Viar. Etta was a city girl, who moved to the farm 79 years ago. She always said that she got her education on the farm. She could plant a garden, milk a cow, sew a quilt, and sooth a crying baby. She loved her family more than anything and took pleasure in cooking Sunday dinner for anyone who sat at her table. Her church and neighbors were equally important to her. She is survived by her devoted children, Russell Link, Allen and Eleanor Link, David and Doris Link, Beulah and Eddie Epling, and Jean and Cecil Porterfield, all of Newport; her 15 grandchildren, Darrel and Teresa Link, Wayne Porterfield, Valerie and Alvin Jones, Sylvia and Wayne Duckett, A.D. and Bonnie Link, Timmy Link, Roger and Roxanna Link, Lisa and Ben Herr, Pam and David Williams, Cindy Epling, Melissa Skurupey, Elizabeth Johnson and Neil, Michael Epling and Kira, Jason Porterfield, Amanda Porter Porterfield, and Daniel Berger, 14 greatgrandchildren; two greatgreat-grandchildren; sisters, Mabel Lucas, and Elenora and Charlie Page; and niece, Hilda Compton. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. on Sunday, November 15, 2009, in the Sherry Memorial Christian Church on Mt. Late Road at Newport with Pastor Matthew Cox and Pastor Eddie Kendall officiating. Burial will follow in the Clover Hollow Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Kendall Funeral Home, 605 Snidow St. in Pembroke on Saturday evening, November 14, 2009, from 6 to 8 p.m. Online condolences may be sent by visiting kendallfuneralhome.com.
