Lewis, Rita McGlothlin
Rita A. Lewis, age 81, of Peterstown, WV, went home to be with the Lord on August 13, 2023, at her home surrounded by her four children. Born Rita A. McGlothlin in Bluefield, WV on June 10, 1942. She was the daughter of the late Con and Geneva Flowers McGlothlin.
She worked in food service most of her life, holding both management and waitress positions. She was a single parent and worked hard to provide for her four children, to which she set the important example in the value of work and personal responsibility. After retirement she spent several years as a Foster Grandparent at Peterstown Elementary School, where she said it was the best job she ever had. She was of the Baptist faith and a member of Cashmere Baptist Church.
She enjoyed her flowers, feeding the birds, watching old westerns, working word search puzzles, and was an avid reader. More than anything, she loved the Lord and her family. She will be remembered for her liken to “Butterflies and Flip Flops,” “Biscuits and Gravy Fridays,” her peanut butter candy at Christmas, and her mac and cheese at family gatherings.
Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband; her second husband, Lee Lewis; two brothers, Tommy and Morgan McGlothlin; one sister, Phyllis Mundy; and one granddaughter, Ashley Nicole Hearn.
Left to cherish her memory are her four children, Vivian Mutter and husband Eric of Ballard, WV, Arville Hearn (Shirley Mercer) of Burkeville, VA, Teresa Vermeal and husband Tommy of Rock Camp, WV, and Kimberly Cook of Illinois; eight grandchildren, Natasha Spencer and husband Philip of Peterstown, Jacob Mutter and wife Erika of Ballard, Jessica Johnson and husband Chris of Roanoke, VA, Cody and Wyatt Belcher of Peterstown, Laken Cook (friend Kristi Painter) of Peterstown, Caeley and Kaiden Cook of Princeton, WV; seven great grandchildren, Ava and Malachi Spencer, Reed and Lincoln Mutter, Briella, Morgan, and Kyllien Johnson; one sister, Connie Williams and husband Herbert of Bluefield, WV; extended family, Brittany, Brandon, Kennedy, and Maybele; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 12:00PM on Thursday, August 17, 2023, at the Broyles-Shrewsbury Funeral Home Chapel in Peterstown, WV, with Pastors Walt Bonnell and Dave Spencer officiating. Burial will follow at Roselawn Cemetery in Princeton, WV. Visitation will be held from 11:00AM until the time of the services on Thursday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to Cashmere Baptist Church, 174 Woodson Road, Ballard, WV 24918, with proceeds to be forwarded to the Monroe County Chapter for Life; The Ballard Christian School, 1395 Adair Ridge Road, Ballard, WV 24918, with proceeds to go towards the Ballard Eagles Athletics expenses, or to the Monroe County Coalition for Families and Seniors located at Market Street Inc., Peterstown, WV (304) 772-5960.
