Lawson, Hazel Call

lawson_hazel_callHazel Call Lawson, 90, of Christiansburg, and formerly of Narrows, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, June 1, 2011, at LewisGale Hospital Montgomery in Blacksburg. She was born in Coaldale, W.Va., on June 22, 1920, and was the daughter of the late Edgar Treless and Nora Myrtle Mahaffey Call. She was the last of 10 siblings. She was preceded in death by her husband, Crozier John Lawson; two sons-in-law; two daughters-in-law; one grandson; and one great-grandson. Lovingly known as “Ma Maw Hazel,” she was a devoted and caring wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. For 27 years, she was a certified nursing assistant, taking great care of many patients, and was deeply admired by her professional peers. Throughout her life, Hazel endured hardships, but as the old Timex slogan stated, she “took a licking, but kept on ticking!” She was also everybody’s favorite aunt, and will be deeply missed by her family and many friends. Left to cherish her memory are her children, Robert Lawson Sr. (Bonnie) ,of Colonial Heights, Va., John C. Lawson Sr. (Freda), of Dublin, Peggy Sparks (Roscoe “Boy”), of Narrows, Janet Craighead, Lynn Lawson, and Hazel’s “Fun-in-law,” Glenn Scaggs, all of Shawsville; 10 grandchildren, Robert Lawson Jr. (Sharon), Chris Royster (Tracie), John Lawson Jr. (Christy), Missy Bray (Jeff), Scott Rombow (Veda), Chris Rombow (Crystal), Angel Roton (Corey), Kenny Craighead (Gloria), Curtis Craighead (Jessica), and Steven Lawson (Leslie); 19 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins; and many friends including her special neighbors. Funeral Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 5, 2011, in the chapel of Riffe’s Funeral Service in Narrows with Pastor Eddie Kendall officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Riffe’s Funeral Service on Saturday, June 4, 2011, from 5 to 8 p.m. Hazel’s husband served as the first commander of VFW Post #6000 in Narrows. In his honor, the family requests that in lieu of flowers, please consider VFW Post #6000, to be earmarked for the troop package program.
