Lancaster, John Fremont
John Fremont Lancaster, 73, of Snowville, passed away Sunday, April 29, 2007, at Carilion New River Valley Medical Center.
He was born August 20, 1933 in Bluefield, West Virginia, and was the son of the late Theodore Roosevelt and Blanche Jennings Lancaster. He retired from the United States Army after serving 25 years which included a tour of duty in Vietnam. John was an avid fisherman and sportsman. For the past 25 years he was a dedicated, active member of the Snowville Volunteer Fire Department and a member of VFW #1184.
He is survived by his loving wife, Sally Ruth Shelburne Lancaster; one brother and sister-in-law, David Lewis and Lois Long Lancaster, one brother-in-law, Harvey D. Shelburne; two nephews, Ronnie Dalton and Dan Shelburne; three nieces, Carolyn Shelburne and Charlotte Shelburne, both of Radford, Va. and Julia Schrader of Denmark, Maine.
Flowers will be appreciated, but for those who wish, they may make memorial contributions in his memory to Snowville Volunteer Fire Department, 4855 Lead Mine Road, Hiwassee, Va. 24347.
The family would like to extend thanks to all their friends and neighbors, with special thanks to Todd Saunders, Lowell and Dot Lancaster, Richard and Nancy Phillips, Coleen Oakley, Dr. Daniel Temeles at the Blue Ridge Cancer Center, Dr. Gregory Steele in Dublin, Va. and Dr. Abel and the emergency room staff at Carilion New River Valley Medical Center.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 2, 2007 at the DeVilbiss Funeral Chapel with Mr. Bobby Sylvia and Mr. Jim Holt officiating. Interment will follow in Highland Memory Gardens. VFW Post#1184 will conduct military graveside rites. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 1, 2007 at the DeVilbiss Funeral Home, Radford.
