Ernest Raymond (Jack) Lafon, 87, of Bowens Road in Pembroke, departed this life Sunday evening, July 8, 2007 at the VA Medical Center in Salem.

Born at Kire in Giles County on March 29, 1920, he was a son of the late Miles Arthur and Mary Virginia Martin Lafon. Jack had earned his living as a skilled mason, was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, New River Ward in Pembroke, and was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps during WW II.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, E. R. (Sambo) Lafon, Jr.; a brother, Shannon Lafon; five sisters, Zada Martin, Helen Kelly, Beatrice Stiff, Hallie Dowdy, and Nora Williams.

He leaves to cherish his memory a son and daughter-in-law, Arthur G. (A.G.) and Sheryl Parr Lafon of Roanoke; two daughters, Imogene (Gene) Surratt of Alexandria, Va. and Jo Ellen Bodyke of Muncie, Ind.; a brother, Richard Lafon of Manassas, Va.; a sister, May Stafford (Walter) of Chester, Va.; and grandchildren, Brian Lafon, Alisha L. Jones, and Rachelle Lafon.

Graveside funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, July 12, 2007 at 2 p.m. with Elder Donnie Medley officiating in the Kire Community Cemetery on Big Stony Creek in Giles County.
