Lafon, Berlin Eugene

Berlin Eugene Lafon, 92, of Newport, departed this life on Monday morning, October 10, 2011, at the home of his daughter, Betty, and in the care of his devoted family. “Gene” was born on February 4, 1919, at Kire, Va., a son of the late Leonard Jackson and Mary Blanche Martin Lafon. He was a member since his youth of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, was a retired crane operator at Virginia Lime Company, and as a young man served in the CCC Camps. He leaves to cherish his memory, his beloved wife, Frances Sexton Lafon; his son and daughter- in-law, Edwin Eugene and Jean Lafon, of Newport; his daughters and son-in-law, Betty Lou Lafon, of Christiansburg, and Judy Sue and Charles Hager, of Dublin; his sister, Audrey Lafon Woods, of Christiansburg; his five grandchildren; and his six great-grandchildren. Funeral Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, October 12, 2011, in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Pembroke Virginia Stake Center in Pembroke. Burial will follow in the Kire Community Cemetery at Kire. The family will receive friends at the church one hour before the services. The family would like to extend heart-felt gratitude to Carilion Hospice and all the others who helped make Gene’s final days better.
