Kubin, Erna

rosesErna Kubin, 72, of Blacksburg, died unexpectedly on Friday, January 10, 2014 and has been embraced by God. She was born on January 6, 1942 in war-torn Europe to Gustav and Augusta Grenke and came to the United States with her parents at age eight. Erna is survived by her husband, Konrad, to whom she has been married for nearly 45 years, daughter Anita, son Dennis and daughter-in-law Amanda (granddaughter Claira), and son Brian and daughter-in-law Rachel (granddaughters Marissa and Abby). She is also survived by her sister-in-law Bärbel de la Motte and nieces and nephews, Gesa, Anja, Chris, Sven, and Kirsten. Erna received her Master’s degree at the University of Colorado and taught English and German in Dearborn Heights, MI; Everett, WA; and Blacksburg High School. She enjoyed serving the community by helping with many projects and fund raisers including Friends of the Library Garden Tour, Blacksburg Interfaith Food Pantry, English as a Second Language, and the Virginia Tech YMCA Thrift Store. She also was involved with many of her children’s activities such as PTA, Girl Scouts, and teaching Sunday School and children’s cooking classes. Erna had a passion for cooking, entertaining, getting together with friends, gardening, reading, and cats. Visitation and viewing for family and friends will be held at McCoy Funeral Home in Blacksburg on Thursday, January 16th from 6:00-8:00 pm, with a memorial service on Friday, January 17 at 4:00 pm at Luther Memorial Lutheran Church in Blacksburg, followed by a reception in the church’s Fellowship Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Blacksburg Interfaith Food Pantry (www.interfaithfoodpantry.org) or the Montgomery County Humane Society (www.mchumane.org).
