Shelba Jean Clower Kirby, 72, of Check, went home to be with Jesus on Wednesday morning, October 29, 2014, gaining complete healing from cancer. She was born on November 1, 1941, to the late Orville and Inez Clower.

She is survived by her loving husband of 50 years, Richard Kirby; one son, Clifton Kirby; one daughter, Angela Conner (Wayne); four grandsons, Troy Kirby (Summer), Kyle Kirby (Leah), Eric Kirby (Amanda) and Jonathan Conner (Lauren); one granddaughter, Brooke Conner; one great-grandson, Marcus; three great-granddaughters Lily, Ryelynn, Arie and another one on the way, Saige. Also surviving are two sisters, Wanda Brickey (Nolan) and Phyllis Crawford; and one brother, Warren Clower; several special nieces and nephews. Shelba also had many faithful friends.

Shelba worked as a nursing assistant for many years. She enjoyed sitting with several elderly community members and up until the past few weeks was canning and working puzzles with Agatha Austin. Shelba loved flowers, canning, and helping others, especially children and the elderly. She had a wonderful sense of humor and positive attitude.

She left behind letters for her family, journals and little notes of encouragement throughout the house. Her church family at Little River Baptist has been a constant support throughout her illness and she loved them dearly. Her faith will continue to be a witness through the lives she has touched.

Please join us in a celebration of Shelba’s life on her birthday, Saturday, November 1, 2014 at 2 o’clock in the afternoon with Rev. Allan Vass and Rev. Leon Alley at Gardner Funeral Home in Floyd, Va. The family will receive guests between noon and 2 p.m. before the service.
