Rufus Lee King, Jr (Lee, Papaw Pete), 81 of Pembroke, VA departed this life February 12, 2023 in his home. Born July 20, 1941 in Giles County, Virginia he was a son of the late Rufus King Sr and Vellen Summers King.

For over 50 years, Lee has been an active member of the Pembroke Volunteer Fire Department whom he considered his second family. You could often find Lee standing or sitting at the fire department or under the tree which he considered a second home. He is retired from the Celanese Corporation after 38 plus years of custodial work.

In addition to his parents Lee is preceded in death by brothers, Freddie King, and Douglas King; a grandson, Henry Loudermilk; and niece, Romona King Taylor.

Left to cherish his memory are sons, Darrell “Pete” King (Connie) of Christiansburg, VA, and Lee Hall (Celest) of Atlanta, Georgia; daughters, Donna Trussell-Fegans (Artimus) of Texas, Rebecca King-Harris (Odallis) of Christiansburg, VA, and Robin King Robertson of Roanoke, VA; 9 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; and 1 great-great grandchild; a brother, Donald King (Madeline) of Pembroke, VA; sister, Pastor Joann King Carper (Pastor Fred Carper) of Pembroke; his very special uncle and best friend, Jim Summers; and his Pembroke Fire Department family.

The family wish to thank his brother, Donnie King for always being there for his brother; his sister, Joann Carper for looking after Lee and providing Sunday Dinner; and his second family of the Pembroke Fire Department.

A funeral service will be conducted on Saturday, February 18, 2023 at 11:00 AM in the Kendall Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Eddie Kendall and Pastor Fred Carper officiating. Funeral services will conclude at Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg, Virginia. The family will receive friends on Saturday, February 18, 2023 from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM.
