John W. King, 85, of 900 Cascade Drive, Pembroke, departed this life Monday, May 14, 2007 at Carilion Giles Memorial Hospital in Pearisburg after a short illness.

Born in Pembroke, Giles County, Virginia on October 20, 1921 he was a son of the late Morton and Virginia Lybrook King. He was retired from Celanese “Celco” plant after 56 years of service.

John was the last surviving sibling of the King family. John’s wife, Alberta Lilly Ford King; his parents; a grandson, Raun Mercer King; brothers and sisters, Ira William King, Ozella King Dickerson, Daniel King, Rufus Berriel King, Marie King Saunders, and Pauline King Montgomery; and nieces and nephews, Douglas King, Bobby Montgomery, Helen Montgomery, Dorothy Chapman, George Montgomery, Jr., and Melvin D. Anderson preceded him in death.

He leaves to cherish his memory one son, Robert Glenn and wife Iretta Brown King of Richmond; five Grandchildren, Latrice Montez King of San Diego, California, Andre Carthorn of Richmond, Virginia, Franchond Agei-Kyem of Alexandria, Virginia, Craig Robinson of Richmond, Virginia, Yasheva Robinson of Richmond, Virginia; two great-grandchildren, Vaunzelle Carthorn of Richmond, Virginia, Raun Mercer King, Jr. of Richmond, Tamara King, Minah King, Drafton King, and Antonio King, all of San Diego, California; two greatgreatgrandchildren, Vaunte Carthorn of Richmond, Virginia, and Diamond Robinson of Richmond, Virginia; one greatgreatgreat-grandchild, Drevaun Carthorn of Richmond, Virginia; 15 nieces and nephews, Jeannette Calloway, Eugenia Calloway, William King, Morton King, Jimmie Edward Chapman, Madeline King, Rufus Lee King, Jr., Frederick M. King, Jo Ann King Carper, Donald Lewis King, Mary Lois Chapman, Mozella Anderson, Barbara Jean Hoston, Elizabeth Hoston, and Jerry Edward Montgomery; brother-in-law, Nelson Saunders; and sister-in-law, Vellen King.

Funeral services will be conducted Friday May 18, 2007 at 12 noon in The First Baptist Church of Pembroke on Chapman Avenue with the Rev. Fred Carper, Jr. and the Rev. Eddie Kendall officiating. The family will receive friends at the church Thursday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. Burial will follow in Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg. Military rites by American Legion Post #311 and #68 and VFW Post #6000. The King family is being served by Kendall Funeral Home at 605 Snidow Street in Pembroke, Virginia.
