Kerr, Vernie Bradley Hazelwood
Vernie Bradley Hazelwood Kerr, age 90, passed away on Saturday, July 15, 2023, at her home in Lindside, WV. Born December 5, 1932, in Bluefield, WV, she was the daughter of the late Opie and Celia Thompson Bradley.
Vernie was a hard worker, having spent 37 years at Celanese, where she was the first woman ever on the Bull Gang. After retiring from Celanese, Vernie spent her time working on the farm. She loved gardening, crocheting, knitting, and quilting. She was an avid cook who loved to feed everyone. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend who will be missed by everyone who knew her.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, William “Bill” Hazelwood; her second husband, Bill Kerr; son, Michael Hazelwood; stepson Steve Kerr; grandson, JR Barnett; two brothers, Glen Bradley and Joe Bradley; and two sisters, Thelma Booth and Loraine Williams.
Those left to cherish Vernie’s memory include her son, Gordy Hazelwood and wife Angie of Lindside, WV; daughter, Marsha “Blackie” Barnett and husband Lee of Statesville, NC; stepson, David Kerr of Pembroke, VA; stepdaughter, Kathy Carter of Pembroke, VA; one sister, Joyce Reese of Ballard, WV; grandchildren, Heather Lester Rivas-Menendez of Statesville, NC, Angela and Lox Leach of Troutman, NC, Ethan and Kaylee Hazelwood of Vinton, VA, Samantha and Anthony Penna of Core, WV, Davey, BJ, and Teddy; great grandchildren, Jonathon Barnett, Gabriel Lester, Mya Lester, and Graycie Barnett of NC; granddaughter in law Crystal Barnett of Hickory, NC; a host of nieces and nephews; special friends, Libby Clark and Brenda Lyons; and her beloved animals, Bella, Anna Bear, and Socks. Additionally, the family would like to thank Vernie’s caregivers, Kim Williams and Judy Cline.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00PM on Monday, July 17, 2023, at the Broyles-Shrewsbury Funeral Home Chapel in Peterstown, WV, with Pastor Jim Wentz and Pastor Paul Broyles officiating. Burial will follow at Swope Cemetery in Lindside, WV. Visitation will be held from 11:00AM until time of services on Monday at the funeral home. Pallbearers are Ethan Hazelwood, Anthony Penna, Jonathon Barnett, Gabriel Lester, Joey Hazelwood, and Will Haynes. Honorary pallbearer JR Barnett.
