Maria Alataris Kappas, 92, of Blacksburg, Va., died Monday, January 4, 2010, at Montgomery Regional Hospital. She was born in Viniani, Evrytania, Greece on October 3, 1917, to the late Demetrios and Theodora Alataris. She was preceded in death by her husband, Nicholas Kappas; and sister, Alexandra Xekalos. She was a member of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, Roanoke, as well as a member of the Philoptohos Society, and the Eastern Star. Mrs. Kappas, along with her husband, Nick, was a constant companion at her husband’s restaurant, The Greek’s, in Blacksburg for many years now known as the Cellar Restaurant. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Chris N. and Maria Kappas, of Blacksburg; grandchildren, Vicki Keriazes and husband, George, and their daughter, Kristina, of Hanover, Pa., Nick Kappas and wife, Jan, of New York, N.Y.; and sister, Anna Havelos, of Blacksburg. The family would like to thank the staff at Kroontje Health Care Center for the wonderful and compassionate care given to their mother. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 9, 2010, in the McCoy Funeral Home Chapel with Father Dean Nastos officiating. Interment will follow in the Westview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, P.O. Box 5055, Roanoke, Va. 24012 or to the Warm Hearth Foundation, 2603 Warm Hearth Drive, Blacksburg, Va. 24060. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. with an Orthodox Prayer Service (Trisagion) at 8 p.m. on Friday evening, January 8, 2010, at the McCoy Funeral Home, 150 Country Club Drive, SW, Blacksburg, Va.
