Johnson, Mason Paul
Mason Paul Johnson, age 74, passed away on Wednesday, January 29, 2025, at the Thomas Memorial Hospital in Charleston, WV. Born June 5, 1950, on Hans Creek in Greenville, WV, he was the son of the late Paul E. and Rita Virginia “Jenny” Thompson Johnson.
Mason retired from Celanese Corporation, Narrows, VA, after 43 years of service. He was a member of the Centerville Presbyterian Church in Greenville, WV, where he served as an elder. He was also a member of the Greenville Ruritan Club. He was a member of the Monroe County Farm Bureau Board, WV Farm Bureau, Monroe Cattlemen’s Association, WV Cattlemen’s Association, American Angus Association, USDA Farm Service Agency County Committee Member. He was an instrumental member of the Greenville Water Company and assisted in the transition to the Red Sulphur Public Service District. He was also the Proprietor of the Indian Creek Angus Farm and a member of Lewisburg Group #10. Mason was an avid sports fan and great supporter of the Mountain View Hawks, Peterstown Pirates, and the James Monroe Mavericks, where his children and grandchildren have played and continue to play with many great Monroe County Athletes. He also was a true West Virginian and cheered for the WVU Mountaineers throughout his life. He made many friends at those sporting events and at other gatherings and his many years of work, always able to find a connection with a family member or friend with someone from another community.
Mason served in the U.S. Army, joining in January 1970, attaining the rank of Sergent E-5. He was deployed and served in Vietnam from July 1970-July 1971, and he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Sharpshooter Badge (M-16 Rifle), Vietnam Service Medal, Expert Badge (M-14 Rifle) and Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal w/60 Device. He was later a member of the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 1108.
Mason was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Jenny Johnson.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 44 years, Teresa Parker Dunlap Johnson; Son, Jason Johnson (Ren), children, Dane, Kason and Noah of Fullerton CA; Daughter, Margaret-Maggie Myers, child Lauren of Greenville WV; Step-Son, Bruce Dunlap (Christina), children Ava, Mya, and Lydia of Peterstown, WV; Stepdaughters, Amy Mann (Kelly), children Gracie, Eli, Ryan, and Wyatt of Wikel, WV; and Julie Shiflet (David Irvine) of Marlinton, WV, children Carter, Laine, and Tripp of Union, WV; Brothers, Roger (Edna) of Union, WV, and Mike of Peterstown, WV.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00PM on Sunday, February 2, 2025, at the Centerville Presbyterian Church in Greenville, WV, with The Reverend Bob Carter and Thelma Garter officiating. Burial will follow at the Greenville United Methodist Church Cemetery in Greenville, WV. Robert Parker, Frank Mills, Bane Morris, Brian Wickline, Tripp Shiflet, Rick Frazier, David Johnson, Steve Ellison, Jim Thomas, and Buck Raines will serve as pallbearers.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, February 1, 2025, from 6:00PM until 8:00PM at the Broyles-Shrewsbury Funeral Home in Peterstown, WV, and Sunday February 2, 2025, from 1:30PM until 2:00PM at Centerville Presbyterian Church prior to the funeral.
