Katherine Ellen Spangler Johnson, age 88, passed away on Saturday, March 18, 2023, at the Havens nursing home in Princeton, WV. Born August 19, 1934, in Pearisburg, VA, she was the only child of Emily Crotshin Spangler and Fred Clark Spangler.

She graduated from Peterstown High School Class of 1952. Following high school, she served in the US Navy. When she returned home, she went to work as the Switchboard Operator for Hoechst Celanese Narrows Plant, and retired in 1997 after many years of service. She was a member of the First Missionary Baptist Church of Ballard and of the Senior Choir. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Peterstown Chapter #118. She was an active supporter of the Ballard Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department. She gave unselfishly to her family, friends, church, and organizations. She was devoted to her Mother and best friend, Emily Crotshin Spangler, taking care of her until her death.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by the love of her life, her husband, Robert “Bob” Johnson on July 23, 2012.

She is survived by several cousins, Herbert and Carol McClaugherty, Diane and Melvin Cash, Margaret and Doug Rice, Sam and Denise Underwood, Frank McClaugherty, and many close friends.

Special ‘Thank You’ to her caregivers, Harry Greco, Elaine Flint, Linda Humphreys, and Denise and Sam Underwood, and the employees of The Havens at Princeton and Compassus Hospice.

In lieu of flowers, please make a memorial donation to the First Missionary Baptist Church of Ballard (P.O. Box 64, Ballard, WV 24918) or the Ballard Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department (P.O. Box 105, Ballard, WV 24918).

Funeral services will be held at 1:00PM on Thursday, March 23, 2023, at the Broyles-Shrewsbury Funeral Home Chapel in Peterstown, WV, with Pastor Tim Sanderson and Rev. Steve Howdock officiating. Entombment will follow at the Birchlawn Abbey Mausoleum in Pearisburg, VA, with members of the Ballard Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department serving as pallbearers.
