Helen Teresa Bowling Johnson, 95, of Christiansburg, reunited with her husband in their Eternal Home on December 15, 2015. From the union of James Nelson Bowling and Rosa Lee Davis, she was introduced to the world on October 23, 1920 in Roanoke, VA.

In 1932, at the age of 12, she was baptized and became a member of Jerusalem Baptist Church. Her education began in the public schools in Roanoke, VA, with graduation from Lucy Addison High School in 1938. She married Carroll Snead Johnson on January 20, 1943. In 1949, they moved to Christiansburg, VA with their five daughters. Her only son was born in 1952.

She became involved in the renovation of the Christiansburg Community Center formally the old Hill School. She was an active member of Friends Elementary School PTA, and supported many activities at Christiansburg Institute. She became a member of Schaeffer Memorial Baptist Church on “Christian Experience” in 1959. She was a devoted and faithful member who became the church’s Mother of the Year in 2000. Mrs. Johnson will forever be cherished in the hearts of family and friends.

She is survived by her five daughters: Carolyn, Sandra, Peggy, Shantell [Stanley], and Jenell; son: Alan [Freda]; 10 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren, one great great-grandchild; one nephew; three nieces; and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 12:00 noon, Monday, December 21, 2015 at Schaeffer Memorial Baptist Church, 580 High Street, Christiansburg, VA, with Rev. Lee E. Suggs, Sr. officiating. Family and friends will be received from 11:00 a.m. until service time. Interment will be at Schaeffer Community Cemetery, Christiansburg, VA. Arrangements by McCoy Funeral Home.
