Johnson, Ellen Ballengee

Ellen Ballengee Johnson, age 83, passed away on Tuesday, November 30, 2021, at Heritage Hall in Rich Creek, VA. Born April 20, 1938, in Second Creek, WV, she was the daughter of the late C.C. “Kit” and Neva Lowe Ballengee.

Ellen was a member of the Red Sulphur Community Church, where she served as choir director and pianist. She received her Master’s Degree in Education from Marshall University, and taught music and choir at Peterstown for many years while also serving as the band director. Additionally, Ellen enjoyed playing music for the Senior Citizens Choir and serving as the Choir Director. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, and sister.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas L. Johnson. Survivors include one son, Keith Johnson of Carrollton, VA; one daughter, Tommie Ellen Bradley of Peterstown, WV; one brother, Edwin Ballengee and wife Mary Jo of Peterstown, WV; four grandchildren, Sydney Bradley, Kaitlyn Johnson and fiancé Isaac Casey, Megan Johnson, and Tyler Johnson; and one great grandchild, Kaiden Casey.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00PM on Saturday, December 4, 2021, at the Broyles-Shrewsbury Funeral Home Chapel in Peterstown, WV, with Pastor Gene Fullen officiating. Burial will follow at the Red Sulphur Springs Community Church Cemetery in Red Sulphur Springs, WV.

Visitation will be from 12:00PM until time of services on Saturday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Ellen’s name to the St. Judes Children’s Research Hospital (www.stjude.org).
