Johnson, Elizabeth Jones

Elizabeth Thornton Jones Johnson, 87, passed from this life to heaven, with her children holding her hands and surrounded by her family, on January 24, 2020.

She was born July 3, 1932 to the late Paul William and Grace Lou Thornton in Shawsville, (Montgomery County) Va. Also preceding her in death was her first husband and father of their children, Donald Edward Jones, Sr.; her second husband, Aaron Kyle (Ernie) Johnson, and her beloved sister, Jane Thornton Davis. She is survived by her daughters, their husbands and children: Rhonda Jones and Gene Knight of Newport News, their son, Christopher Knight of South Carolina; Rosalyn Jones and Brian Sklute of Poquoson, their daughter, Brianna Sklute Gatch, her husband, Mason Gatch of Midlothian; their son, Brandon Sklute of Poquoson; and her son, Donald Edward (Eddie) Jones, Jr. of Newport News; her sister, Elsie Charlton of Christiansburg; her brother, Raymond Thornton of Christiansburg; several nieces, nephews, extended family; and many church friends.

Elizabeth retired from the Montgomery County Treasurer’s Office where she had a building full of friends. In the remaining years of her life she lived in the Newport News area and attended Bethel Baptist Church where she loved and befriended one and all. Elizabeth was a beacon of love to all who knew her. Her circle was large and she will be missed dearly.

The Newport News Service will be handled by George Hamann of Claytor Rollins Funeral Home and held at Bethel Baptist Church with Pastor Doug Echols officiating the service.

A graveside service will be at 11:30 am Tuesday, February 4, 2020 at Sunset Cemetery in Christiansburg. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, February 4, 2020 from 10-11 am at McCoy Funeral Home.

Flowers may be sent to Bethel Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Heart Association or Bethel Baptist Church in Yorktown in remembrance of her.
