Etha Smith Davis Janey, 87, died Sunday, July 8, 2007, at Radford Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

She was born April 30, 1920 in Oakvale, W.Va., the sixth child of Roden and Nancy Akers Smith. She was predeceased by her parents; five brothers and sisters; by her first husband, Cecil W. Davis, father of her children; and by her second husband, Buck Janey.

She worked for many years in various grocery stores around the New River Valley, including Winston’s Food Store, Bibee’s, the Norfolk and Western Commissary, White Front Grocery, and Wade’s. Mrs. Janey was fondly known by her last name by many people in her later years and enjoyed working in public establishments and knowing so many customers. She made a loving home for her children by herself through unbelievable hard work and was the world’s best Maw Maw to her 14 grandchildren.

Mrs. Janey is survived by her six children, Lacy Davis and Susan of Spokane, Wash., Joe Davis, Sr. of Dublin and Teresa Simpkins Davis, Pat Davis King and husband, Bill, of Dublin, Ron Davis, Sr. and wife, Lois, of Claytor Lake, Peggy Davis Gravley and husband, Ed, of Radford, and Darla Davis Donald and husband, Wayne, of Blacksburg. Surviving grandchildren include, Mitzi Davis Smith (Tony), Joe Davis, Jr. (Andrea), Ben Davis, Mike King (Leslie), Steve King (Regina), Beth King, Ronald Davis, Jr., Lisa Gravley Brown (Paul), Chris Donald, Megan Donald, David Davis, Mathew Davis, Tim Homa, and Todd Homa; ten great-grandchildren, Wil, RaeClaire, Reid Griggs, Annie Turner, Ryan Krupnick, Lydia, James Michael, Tyler, and Lauren King, and Noah Brown; and numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

She will be sadly missed by a family who loved her beyond belief and who are thankful for the strong and powerful force she was in each of their lives.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the United Cerebral Palsy Research and Educational Foundation, 1660 L Street NW, Suite 700, Washington, D.C. 20036 in Mrs. Janey’s name and in honor of Ryan Krupnick, her great grandson. Much appreciation is offered to the staff of the nursing center and Drs. Judy and Solomon for their compassionate and loving care.

The family will receive visitors from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, July 10,2007 at DeVilbiss Funeral Home. A celebration of life service will be conducted by the Reverend Chris Donald at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 11, 2007 in the chapel at DeVilbiss Funeral Home with interment in Sunrise Memorial Gardens. The family is being served by DeVilbiss Funeral Home, Grove Avenue, Radford.
