Ervin Luther (Big Erv) Hypes, 78, of Blacksburg, died Wednesday, December 31, 2008 at Montgomery Regional Hospital. Big Erv was a true Hokie fan, golfer, pool player, and was full of life and laughter.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond Luther and Brown Ribble Kent Hypes and a brother, Roscoe. He is survived by son, Greg (Mouse); and daughter, Crystal and her fiance, Paul Davis; grandsons, Ira and Shane Hypes; his friend and mother of his children, Patsy Martin, of Christiansburg; brothers and sisters-in-law, Kenneth (Andy), of Tennessee, Lee (Leroy) and Wanda, of Pembroke, Paul (Bushrod) and Joyce, of Blacksburg; sister and brother-in-law, Martha Ray (Marty) and Jack Bolt, of Tucson, Ariz.; cousin and special friend, Billy Ray (Jocko) and Linda Hypes; sister-in-law, Linda Hypes Jenkins; and several nieces and nephews; special friends, Roy Davis, John Stutler, Holden and J. Gregory Dawson and special friend and caretaker, Dolly Miller.

The family would like to thank Dr. J. Michael Payne, Dr. R. Lester, Dr. D. Osimani, and ICU Nurse Lillian, and especially Dr. Rivera and Dr. S. York.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, January 3, 2009 at 2 p.m. in the McCoy Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. John Hopkins officiating. Interment will follow in Westview Cemetery, Blacksburg. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday evening at McCoy Funeral Home, 150 Country Club Dr., Blacksburg.
