Hypes, Edith Whitt

The Welsh poet, Dylan Thomas, wrote ‘Do not go gentle into that good night”. He obviously did not know Edith Whitt Hypes. Edith, born August 5, 1924 in Frankford, West Virginia had a different philosophy: Live gently, treat everyone you meet with dignity and respect, and love thy god and family with all your might. For almost 95 years she faithfully lived this philosophy.

On June 13, 2019 she passed gently into the good night at Carilion Giles Community Hospital to be reunited in heaven with so many friends and family that knew and loved her, especially her husband Tommy and two sons Tommy Hypes Jr. and Roger Dale Hypes who preceded her in death.

Edith was the last survivor of a large family and also preceded in death by her parents Robert and Nannie Cornwell Whitt of Frankford, West Virginia, 2 sisters and 6 brothers: Oda Songer of Pearisburg, Mary Fleeman of Narrows, and Bobby, Albert, Bernard, Jake, Tommy, and Roy Whitt at various locations across the US.

She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law: Jerry and Lisa Hypes of Hampton and Terry and Connie Hypes of Greer, South Carolina; eight grandchildren, Greg, Jonathan, Brenton, Daniel, Robert, and Joseph Hypes, 8 great grandchildren, and dozens of family and friends across Giles County and the US.

Celebration of life services will be held at the Kendall Funeral Home Funeral Chapel , Pembroke, Thursday at 11:00 am followed by interment at Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg.

Edith resided in Bluff City and Giles County, Virginia for the last 75 years and for the last 10 was at Riverview/Heritage Hall in Rich Creek, Virginia.
