Lawna Mae Harkrader Hurd, 92, of Pulaski, died Saturday, May 9, 2009, in Highland Ridge Rehabilitation Center. She was born April 29, 1917, in Pulaski, and was the daughter of the late Frank B. and Janie Smith Harkrader.

She was a life-long member of the First United Methodist Church, a graduate from Pulaski High School Class of 1935, and was a former employee of Wallner Mills and Pulaski Drugs.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Nat H. “Ape-Eye” Hurd Jr.; a brother, Frank B. Harkrader Jr.; a sister, Margaret Peacock; and a son-in-law, Barry Wayne Akers.

She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Nat H. Hurd III and his wife, Fran, of Smithfield, Va., David A. Hurd and his wife, Joy, of Draper; and one daughter, Janie Hurd Akers, of Pulaski; grandson, Jeffrey S. Hurd and wife, Denise, of Yorktown, Va.; one granddaughter, Sara Danielle Hurd, of Draper; three greatgrandsons, Jasper Aiden Hurd, of Draper, Jackson Luke Hurd and Jonathan Cole Hurd and one great-granddaughter, Bailey Grace Hurd, all of Yorktown, Va. She was also blessed with step-grandchildren, Shannon Custer, of Christiansburg, and Shawn Custer and his wife, Kristen, of Mineral, Va.; stepgreat -grandchildren, Dorian Custer, of Draper, Tori and Nathan Custer, of Christiansburg, Thomas Ashton Custer, Mineral, Va.; as well as many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, nephews, great-great-nieces, nephews and many loving friends and neighbors.

The family would like to offer special thanks to Dr. Kenneth Pendergrast, New River Internal Medicine and its staff, and Highland Ridge Rehabilitation Center for the care of Mrs. Hurd.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday May 12, 2009, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Thomas M. Seagle & Sons. Entombment will follow in the Highland Memory Gardens in Dublin. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday from 1 to 2 p.m. Memorials expressing sympathy may be made to the Daily Bread or to the First United Methodist Church.
