Hullinger, Eleanor
Eleanor Hullinger of Bradenton, Florida and Bedford, Massachusetts, formerly of Draper, VA, died January 13, 2015. She will be remembered by family and friends for her love, loyalty, energy, and service. Many lives were touched by her actions, born from a sincere faith.
She was born in Ft. Myers, Florida on January 19, 1922. She graduated from Bradenton High School and the Gordon Kellar Training School for Nurses, also receiving a degree from the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg and a graduate degree from Radford University in Virginia.
Eleanor was a veteran of WWII, having served in the Army Nurse Corps at Walter Reed Hospital, the 241st General Hospital, and the 65th Field Hospital in the European Theater.
She was married for 60 years to Rev. Hallett Hullinger. After graduation from Columbia Seminary, the Hullingers served at Belzoni Presbyterian Church, Belzoni, Mississippi, Westminster Presbyterian in Natchez, Mississippi, and Draper’s Valley Presbyterian Church, Draper Virginia. Eleanor became head librarian at the then newly formed Pulaski County High School, where she served until retiring. She was a member of the DAR, Alleghany Chapter, of Blacksburg, Virginia.
Eleanor was preceded in death by her parents, Hoyt and Violet Hull of Bradenton, Florida, her brother Dr. Harry Hull of Blacksburg, Virginia, and her husband, Rev. Hallett Hullinger. She is survived by daughter Elizabeth and George Planansky of Lexington, MA, son Hallett and Nancy Hullinger of Tulsa, OK, granddaughters Maria Planansky, Anne Eshelman, Elizabeth Hendrix, and Abigail Hullinger, great-granddaughter Elizabeth Eshelman, sister-in-law, Dorothy D. Hull of Colorado Springs, CO, nephews John Hull and C. Andrew Hull, niece Jane Oliver, and by grand niece and nephews Stella York, Blake Strickler, and Cory Strickler.
A memorial service will be held at Draper’s Valley Presbyterian Church, January 23rd at 11:00am. Arrangements by McCoy Funeral Home, Blacksburg.
