Hughes, Owen

hughes_owenOwen Hughes, age 75, of Blacksburg died Thursday, June 4, 2015. He was born in Chicago, Illinois on November 7, 1939. Owen received his BS and MS at MIT in Boston and was on the faculty of the University of New South Wales, where he completed his PhD in Naval Architecture. In 1988 Dr. Hughes joined the faculty of Va Tech in the Aeronautical and Ocean Engineering Department. Dr. Owen Hughes dedicated his entire career to the advancement and improvement of ship structures and the education of students in ship structures. His widely known book published with SNAME, Ship Structural Design: A Rationally-Based, Computer­ Aided Optimization Approach, is used by naval architects the world over. The computer program MAESTRO, also developed by Dr. Hughes, is used by 13 navies, various structural safety authorities, and by over 80 structural designers and shipyards in Europe, North America, Asia and Australia.

He is survived by sisters Clare Hughes of Washington, DC and Mary Ellen Hughes of Key Biscayne, FL.

The family will receive friends Saturday, June 6 2015 from 3-8:00 pm in the McCoy Funeral Home, Blacksburg.
