Alva S. Hughes, 86, of Radford, passed away on Friday, September 22, 2006. Mr. Hughes served in the U.S. Army during WW II, receiving the Purple Heart Medal. He was an optician for thirty-seven years and ran the well-known Hughes Optical Dispensary.

Surviving are his beloved wife, Leohma Webb Hughes of Radford; three sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry R. and Betty J. Hughes of Catawba, Harold L. and Rebecca D. Hughes of Salem, and Jeffery W. and Rita Hughes of New York City, N.Y.; and daughter and son-in-law, Sarah H. and Phillip Browning of Dublin. Also surviving are four granddaughters, two grandsons, and two great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, September 24, 2006 from 6 to 8 p.m. at DeVilbiss Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, September 25, 2006 at DeVilbiss Funeral Chapel with the Pastor Greg Webb officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Cemetery, Christiansburg.
