Huffman, Dan Martin

Dan Martin Huffman, 81, of Pearisburg, departed this life Monday, November 19, 2012, at Carilion New River Valley Medical Center in Christiansburg. He was born in Craig County on December 29, 1930, and was the son of the late Cecil Peck and Mamie Sue Sublett Huffman. In addition to his mother and father, he was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Betty Robertson Huffman; and a sister, Nancy H. Brown.

A 1952 graduate of Lynchburg College, Dan was awarded a scholarship to the University of Virginia in 1953, where he earned a Master’s Degree in 1957. He began his teaching career in Giles County in 1952 at Narrows High School. He subsequently became a visiting teacher for Giles County Public Schools in 1956. In 1962, he was appointed Principal of Narrows Elementary School, a position he held until his retirement in 1986. In 1987, he returned to Craig County, where he and Betty operated Southview Farm, selling Christmas trees for many years.

Left to cherish his memory are a daughter, Connie McCall and husband, Bryce, of Christiansburg; a granddaughter, Holly Williams and husband, Daron, of Christiansburg; two very special great-grandchildren, Carson and Caroline Williams; a sister, Nell H. Ross, of Blacksburg; two brothers, C. Richard Huffman, of Dry Fork, and David L. Huffman, of Roanoke; several nieces, nephews, cousins; and many special friends, including the staff of Riverview Nursing Home and Giles Dialysis.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, November 23, 2012, in the Chapel of Riffe’s Funeral Service in Narrows with Pastor Gary Poff officiating. Burial will follow in Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg. The family will receive friends at Riffe’s Funeral Chapel Friday from noon until just prior to the service.
