Leonard Alvin Howery, 89, of Blacksburg, Va., died Thursday, January 29, 2009, at Skyline Manor Nursing Home. He was born in Floyd County, Va., on April 14, 1919, to the late Emmett Quincy and Flora Egather Sowers Howery.

Leonard retired from Hercules, Inc. in 1980 with 34 years of service. He attended Roanoke Valley Presbyterian Church. He was a combat veteran in the Army during World War II. He was a member of VFW Post #5311, Christiansburg, and also a life member of the Disabled American Veterans. Mr. Howery was a volunteer leader for the 4-H Club with over 60 years services.

He is survived by his wife, Helen S. Howery, of Blacksburg; a daughter and son-in-law, Brenda K. and Paul Henderson, of Blacksburg; a son and daughter-in-law, Jimmy Dean and Dot Howery, of Floyd; three grandchildren, Ricky Dean Howery, Rhonda Arthur and husband, Steve, and Paula K. Bryant and husband, Joey; five great-grandchildren, Brandon Howery, Kendra Arthur, Beth Griffith, Gage Bryant, and Kierstin Bryant.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 31, 2009, in the McCoy Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Pete Bain and Dr. Charles Taylor officiating. Interment will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Christiansburg.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the National D-Day Memorial, P.O. Box 77, Bedford, Va. 24523. Friends may call anytime Friday after noon and the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday evening, January 30, 2009, at McCoy Funeral Home, 150 Country Club Drive, S.W., Blacksburg, Va.
