Linda Hitchcock Horst, 102, of Blacksburg, died September 21, 2005. She was born January 24, 1903 to Helen Page and George Royal Hitchcock in Albany, New York, and she was graduated in nursing from Crouse Irving Hospital, Syracuse, New York. She came to Blacksburg, Virginia in 1949 with her late husband Professor Cecil Albert Horst of the Industrial Engineering Department of VPI. They had met in New York City and then lived in Ohio, Massachusetts and Connecticut.

Linda Horst is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Rita Carolyn and Gilbert Randolph Lange, of Blacksburg. She leaves a grandson, Scott Robert Lange and his wife, Pamela Jane, of Chagrin Falls, Ohio, and their two sons, Stuart Russell Lange and Christian Horst Lange. She also leaves her grandson, Richard Rudolph Lange and his wife, Jennifer, of Bloomfield, New Jersey and their daughter, Madeline Ainsley Lange.

Linda lived a long and fruitful life and worked in the Agriculture Department at VPI. She volunteered in church circles and helped to establish the YMCA in Lucy Lee Lancaster’s home on Washington Street. The family would like to thank the caring staffs of Greenwood Assisted Living and Heritage Hall and also Dr. Slayton and Dr. Payne, of Blacksburg.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, October 22, 2005 with the Reverends Susan Verbrugge and Catherine Snyder, Presbyterian ministers presiding at McCoy Funeral Home, 150 Country Club Dr., Blacksburg. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her name to Carilion Hospice Services, New River Valley, 707 Randolph Street Suite 251, Radford, Va. 24141.
