Luke Hopkins, 86, of Pearisburg, departed this life Friday morning, August 20, 2010, at Giles Community Hospital in Pearisburg. Born at Greasy Creek in Pike County, Ky., on August 29, 1923, he was a son of the late Luther and Florence Ramsey Hopkins. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ann Collins Hopkins; two infant children; a son and a daughter; his parents; and brothers, Bruce Hopkins, Benny Floyd Hopkins and Clyde Hopkins; and sisters, Ocie Collins and Gracie Clevinger. He leaves to cherish his memory his brother, Paul Reed Hopkins, of Wolf Pit, Ky.; and three granddaughters, Pam Kast, of Goldbond, Mary Havens Davis, of Galax, and Rachel Havens Slusser, of Blacksburg; many nieces and nephews; and his special kids, Dakota and Shaye Havens and Brogan and Gavin Davis. Luke was a veteran of the United States Army, WWII, serving in Europe and the South Pacific. He was a member of the American Legion, worked many years in the coal mines and as an auto worker for General Motors before settling in Giles County where he and his wife Mary Ann ran the East End Service Station and Store for thirty years. Luke was an avid animal lover who protected and loved the community pets. He was a self-taught artist and his hobby was drawing. He and his wife for many years attended Shaver Memorial Church in Pearisburg. The family will receive friends at the Kendall Funeral Home, 605 Snidow St., Pembroke Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the Kendall Funeral Home with burial following in Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg.
