hopkins mansell herbertMansell Herbert Hopkins Jr., 85, of Blacksburg, died Monday, September 23, 2013 at Lewis-Gale Hospital -Montgomery. He was born in Faquier County on October 2, 1927, to the late Mansell Herbert Sr. and Nannie McClanahan Hopkins. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Iva Mary Hopkins. He earned his B. S. in 1953 and his M. S. in 1958 from V.P.I., and his Ph.D. in 1964 from Iowa State University. He retired as a professor of Electrical Engineering at Virginia Tech. He was a veteran of the United States Army. Mansell was a member of the Blacksburg Baptist Church. He was a member of Hunters Masonic Lodge No. 156 A.F. & A.M., where he was a Past Grand Commander of the Grand Commandery Knights Templar of Virginia from 1987 to 1988. He is survived by his children, M. Herbert Hopkins III, Robert Sidney Hopkins, Barbara H. Brady, and W. Dwight Hopkins; seven grandchildren, Jonathan Hopkins, Krystal Hopkins, Aaron Hopkins, Jessica Hopkins, Garrett Hopkins, Catherine Bennett Nwosu, and Dwight Brady; and one great-grandchild, Jabari Nwosu. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, September 26, 2013, at Blacksburg Baptist Church with the Rev. Tommy McDearis and the Rev. Todd Millsaps officiating. Interment will follow in the Memorial Gardens of the New River Valley. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at McCoy Funeral Home, Blacksburg.
