hopkins emma savageEmma Katherine Savage Hopkins, of North Lauderdale, Fla., formerly of Roanoke and Radford, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, September 22, 2013. She was born on April 1, 1922, at the height of the Great Depression, the second daughter of George Lee and Georgia (Spaites) Savage in Norfolk. Emma received a Bachelor of Arts in English from Hampton Institute in 1947. She moved to Radford after being recruited to teach at a newly constructed, segregated elementary school. In 1948, she met and married Muriel Tyree Alexander, of Radford, to which a son, Wayne Lee, was born. Married for 25 years to Tyree, she was a dutiful wife who cared for him until this death in 1975. She met and married Howard Hopkins in 1984. The couple lived in Roanoke, where she served at High Street Baptist Church. After Howard’s death, Emma moved to North Lauderdale, Fla. in 2001, to live with her son and his family. Emma’s life has been one of Christian sojourn, serving faithfully at First Calvary Baptist Church of Norfolk, Zion Hill Baptist in Radford, VA, High Street Baptist Church of Roanoke and Mount Hermon AME in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Emma was an active member of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and the Order of the Eastern Star in Hampton, Roanoke and Radford. She leaves to cherish her memory one son, Wayne Lee Alexander (Jacklan), of Lauderhill, Fla.; one granddaughter, Jazmine, (Hampton University student); two nieces, Elaine Hood, of Atlanta, Ga. and Brenda Lawrence, of Radford; a stepdaughter, Rochelle Hopkins, of Roanoke; step-granddaughter, Michelle Hopkins, of West Palm Beach, Fla.; great-nephews, Anthony, of Radford, Brian Hood, of Atlanta, Ga., and Chuck Hood, of Miami Shore, Fla.; and two great-nieces, Erin Lawrence, of Richmond and Cheryl Hood-Miller, of Atlanta, Ga. Emma Hopkins leaves a glowing legacy of service, driven by a love for the Lord. Everyone one she has ever touched has been truly blessed. Funeral services will be held at noon on Wednesday, October 2, 2013, at Zion Hill Baptist Church-910 W. Rock Road, Radford, VA 24141 with the Rev. Eric Ramey officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral service. Interment will be in Old Dominion Memorial Gardens.
