Holmes Jr., Forrest Shepperson

Forrest Shepperson Holmes, Jr., of University Park, Md. and of Roanoke, Va., died on Wednesday November 7, 2007 in Roanoke.

He was born on September 20, 1922 in Washington, D.C. and was predeceased by his parents, Miriam McDonnell Holmes and Forrest Shepperson Holmes.

He is survived by his sister, Margaret Holmes Kelley; two nieces, Charlotte Kelley Porterfield and her husband, Bittle W. Porterfield, III and by Margaret Kelley Miles and her husband, Thomas P. Miles. He is also survived by two greatnephews, B. Wilson Porterfield, IV and his wife, Holly Porterfield and Forrest Kelley Porterfield and his wife, Kathryn Porterfield; two great-nieces, Kelley Olivia Miles and Allison McDonnell Miles; and one great-great nephew, Bittle Wilson Porterfield, V.

Mr. Holmes graduated from St. Albans School, Washington, D.C., Princeton University and Harvard Law School. He served as a First Lieutenant and Tank Commander in the United States Army in Italy 1944 to 1945 and was wounded in action. He served a second tour of foreign service in Germany as a troop commander and also served on the Regimental Special Staff in the United States Constabulary. He was a retired Colonel in the United States Army Reserves. He spent his career serving in the Office of the General Counsel of the Defense Department. He was a member of the Maryland Bar, the Massachusetts Bar and the District of Columbia Bar. He was certified to practice before the Supreme Court of the United States.

Mr. Holmes will be buried in the Holmes Family Cemetery in Newbern, Va. Arrangements by Stevens Funeral Home, Pulaski, Va.
