Mary Ellen Stump (Ella) Hobbs, 90 of Pearisburg, went “Home” on Monday, April 18, 2011, where she was joyfully met by her predeceased relatives. Waiting with open arms were her loving husband of 56 years, W.W. “Willie” Hobbs; her mama and daddy, John Thomas Stump and Zora Morris Stump; her brothers, Charlie, William and Douglas Stump; her sisters, Virginia Stump, Mabel Martin and Frances Williams; one niece, Dreama Shadowens; and nephew, Bobby Gene Williams. Mrs. Hobbs was of the Methodist faith. She was a quiet and private person in the public’s eye but was the hub of activities involving her immediate and extended family. She loved visits from her relatives and started cooking as soon as they entered the door. “You couldn’t go away hungry.” She also, in her healthier years, liked to garden, make candies and cakes, plan for the next birthday card to send, and make the next year’s Christmas list. Mrs. Hobbs is survived by one son, William W. “Billy” Hobbs, of Pearisburg; 11 nieces and nephews; several great and great-great-nieces and nephews, who lovingly called her “Aunt Ella,” but thought of her more as a second grandmother. Funeral Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Thursday, April 21, 2011, at the Givens Funeral Chapel in Pearisburg with the Dr. Fred L. Austin officiating with burial following in the Fairview Cemetery in Narrows, Va. The family will receive friends at the Givens Funeral Home one hour before the service from noon to 1 p.m. Online condolences can be sent to the family at givensfuneralhome.com.
