Helvey, Charles (Charlie) Edward
Charles (Charlie) Edward Helvey, 74, of McCoy, died, Saturday, August 11, 2012, at Heritage Hall Healthcare Center. He was born in Radford on December 3, 1937, to the late Robert Henderson and Sally Villa Roberts Helvey, and was preceded in death by his wife Clara McCoy (Clarabell) Helvey; a son Samuel Charles Helvey; a granddaughter, Callie McCoy Heddin; grandson-in-law, Chris Young. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. Charlie retired from Hercules, Inc. and Alliant Tech Systems, Inc. with over 29 years of service. Charlie was an avid HAMM Radio operator. He is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Betsy McElroy Parker and Donnie Parker, of Amarillo, Texas and Pamela Helvey, of Boise, Idaho; one son and daughter-in-law, Bernard and Donna Duncan, of McCoy. He is also survived by two brothers, Robert Helvey, of Lynchburg and Richard Helvey, of Radford; three grandchildren, B.J. and Jana McElroy, of Houston, Texas, Dusty Duncan, of Roanoke, Denise Young, of Amarillo, Texas; five great-grandchildren, Miles and Evie Heddin, of Austin, Texas, Jace and Jagan Young, of Amarillo, Texas, and Trevor Duncan, of Radford. Charlie would like to give a special thanks to Sherree Thompson, of Blacksburg, for her dedicated help and concern for Charlie over the years. Also a special thanks to his friends and neighbors for all of their love, concern, and help. Larry and Yvonne McCoy, Melvin and Dolly Smith, Dudley and Faye Scott, Ollie Jones, and Kenneth and Vanessa McCoy, all of McCoy. Kenneth Tickle and Bob Thomas, both of Dublin, O.G. Nester, of Hillsville, Sheri Brown, of Salem, and David Kroul, of West Virginia. Memorial services will be held Tuesday, August 14, 2012 at 6 p.m. in the McCoy Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Gary McCoy officiating. Interment will be in McCoy Family Cemetery, McCoy. The family will receive friends following the service at McCoy Funeral Home, 150 Country Club Drive, SW, Blacksburg.
