Helms, Martha Mary

Martha Mary Helms 91, of Christiansburg VA, died Sunday July 11, 2021. She was born in Blacksburg, VA, on July 24, 1929, to the late Howard Grant and Virginia Strickler Helms and was also preceded in death by sisters, Helen H. Compton, Ruth Helms Payne, brother Harley
Helms, dear friend Doris Antrim as well as her nephew Ralph S. Compton, of Phoenix, AZ, niece Virginia Burrowbridge, of Culpeper, VA, great nephew Sky Curtis and close friend Bill Burrowbridge.

Her passing marks the end of the local generation of the Helms family who have called the Blacksburg area home for so many years. Martha grew up in Blacksburg and joined the Navy after high school where she began her nursing career. She was honorably discharged in 1958. Nursing took Martha to Richmond and Atlanta before she and Doris returned to the Christiansburg area. Martha enjoyed gardening and visiting with her neighbors in The Villas at Peppers Ferry community.

She is survived by niece Nancy P. Curtis, of Virginia Beach and nephew Donald Compton, of Atlanta, GA.; great-nieces and nephews, Steve Compton, Jill Compton Loy, Gary Compton, Ryan Burrowbridge, Adam Burrowbridge, Sarah Casto, Jonathan Compton, and Marco Compton.

Private funeral services and interment will be in the Westview Cemetery, Blacksburg, Rev. Gary McCoy officiating.

The family would like to give a special thank you to neighbors Linda and Eugene Kast, caretaker Theresa Lovern, the doctors and nurses at LewisGale Montgomery and the Hospice team at Carilion for their care and support.

The family will receive friends through a Hello Goodbye Brunch welcoming and honoring neighbors at 11am on Saturday morning August 7, 2021 at the Peppers Ferry Clubhouse, Christiansburg VA. Those that wish to remember Martha may make a donation to The Memory Garden located at The Villas of Peppers Ferry where Martha lived.
