haynes walter edgarWalter Edgar Haynes, 66, of Blacksburg, passed away peacefully at home on June 9, 2012. He was born on May 17, 1946 in Elamsville, Va. He graduated from Woolwine High School in 1964 and was a member of the 1962-63 State Championship basketball and the 1961-62 District Championship baseball teams. He was a member of New Hope Church of the Brethren in Elamsville. He entered the Air Force on August 7, 1964 and was honorably discharged on February 11, 1966 earning the rank of Airman 3C. After moving to Christiansburg in 1966, he married his wife, Marlyn Sue Fleming on May 17, 1968. He retired in November 2011 and was the Vice President of Southland Log Homes in Christiansburg, Virginia. He also served on the Montgomery County Planning Commission for several years. He was an avid softball player, winning multiple national championship titles and played on a team up until the summer of 2011. He is survived by Melani Fleming Miller, daughter; Stephen Aaron Haynes, son; Chuck Miller, son-in-law; Allison Haynes, daughter-in-law; and granddaughters, Elaine Bland, Rachael Bland, Camden Haynes, Cooper Haynes and Sawyer Haynes. He is also survived by his siblings, Betty Cannaday, Edward Haynes, Carolyn Moran, Ronnie Haynes and Kennie Haynes. He is preceded in death by his father, Monroe E. Haynes and Virginia F. Haynes, both of Elamsville. The family will receive friends on Monday, June 11, 2012 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the McCoy Funeral Home, Blacksburg.
