Thomas Lee Hawley, 80, of Pulaski, died on Sunday morning, March 27, 2011, at his home. The Savior came and gently took Tom’s hand and led him Home. He was born in Roanoke, Va., on January 18, 1931, and was the son of the late Cleo Glatis Hawley and Cora Rebecca Quisenberry Hawley Gentry. He was also preceded in death by a baby daughter, Rebecca Doris; a sister, Joyce; stepmother, Retha Hawley; a niece, Karen Andersen; and special in-laws, Godfrey and Doris Smith. Tom was a member of the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict. He studied at the University of Virginia and began a lengthy newspaper career as a sports writer at the Times-World in Newport News, Va., and worked for various newspapers throughout Virginia and Tennessee. He was a business writer and later the Creative Services Manager for the Roanoke Times. Tom was a Diabetes Moderator on the Web for PlanetRX. More recently, he worked as a VICAP coordinator with the Agency on Aging in Pulaski, finishing his newspaper career as a part-time columnist for the Southwest Times in Pulaski. Tom was a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church in Pulaski, and a 50 year member of the American Legion. Surviving are his beloved “Bride” of 57 years, Glenna Lois Smith Hawley; children and spouse, Deborah and David Zamorski, of Boones Mill, Va., Teresa Hawley, of Knoxville, Tenn., Robert Hawley, of Roanoke, Va., and Barbara Hawley, of Knoxville, Tenn.; grandchildren, Rebecca Hawley, of Ithaca, N.Y., Ivan Zamorski, of Boones Mill, Va., Thomas Zamorski, of Roanoke, Va., and James Register, of Knoxville, Tenn.; great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Amanda, Eloxia and Damian; brother and sister-in-law, Rodney and Elizabeth Hawley, of Naples, Fla.; sister and brother-in-law, Linda Kay and John Crabtree, of Garner, N.C.; sisters-in-law and spouses, Barbara Smith and James Stillman, of Chesapeake, Va., and Karen Smith and Harold Wertz, of Newport News, Va.; and many dear nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 30, 2011, from the First United Methodist Church, Pulaski, with the Rev. Hugh Kilgore officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery, Pulaski. Visiting will be held on Wednesday morning at the church where the family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m. until the service hour.
