Hawkins, Clara Dawkins

Clara Ann Hawkins, age 87, of Blacksburg, died Thursday, October 2, 2014, at her home. She was born in Rockingham, NC on February 25, 1927 to the late W. Perry and Linelle Sullivan Dawkins.

She was preceded in death by her sisters, Essie Cardwell and Elizabeth Thrower, and her brothers, Thomas Dawkins and Jack Dawkins.

She completed her registered nursing degree in 1949 from Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Charlotte, NC. She provided nursing care to many patients in NC, Iowa and for 15 years at the Virginia Tech Student Health Center before retiring in 1989.

She was a longtime member of Blacksburg Baptist Church and gave of her time and talents through the Women’s Missionary Union, Agape Circle and Fidelis Sunday School Classes, Senior Adult programs and other church committees. She will be remembered by her many friends for her well directed quick wit and welcoming dinner table where she served many wonderfully cooked meals to family and friends.

She is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 63 years, George W. Hawkins, daughter Anne Faris of Blacksburg, sons and daughters-in-law, Gregg W. and Crystal Hawkins, of Apex, NC, Michael D. and Cecilia Hawkins of Broadway, VA, grandchildren, Jonathan (wife, Stephanie) Faris, Jeremy (wife Janell) Faris, and Kate Faris, Allison and Grayson Hawkins, Camden and Gerek Hawkins, great-granddaughters, Madeline and Samantha Faris and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, October 11, 2014 at 2:00 pm in the Blacksburg Baptist Church with Dr. Tommy McDearis, Rev. Todd Millsaps and Dr. Don McKinney officiating. Interment will follow in the Westview Cemetery. Friends may call anytime after 12:00 noon Friday, and the family will receive friends from 6-8:00 pm Friday evening at the McCoy Funeral Home, 150 Country Club Dr. SW, Blacksburg.
