Hawkes, Dennis Atherton

Dennis Atherton Hawkes, 80, of Blacksburg, Va., loving and devoted husband and father, passed away on Monday, August 30, 2010, surrounded by his family. He is preceded in death by is parents, Wyman and Eliza Hawkes of Berkeley, Mass. He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Beverly A. Hawkes; daughter, Joann H. Myers and son-inlaw, Marsh H. Myers llI, of Lititz, Pa.; daughter, Christie H. Dapper and son-in-law, Robert W. Dapper, of Blacksburg, Va.; brother, F. Blaine Hawkes and sister-inlaw, Alma Hawkes; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He proudly served his country in the United States Army followed by a distinguished career in higher education. He graduated from University of Maine and earned a doctorate degree from Penn State. Dennis was involved in many civic organizations though out his life including Kiwanis, Lions Club, Rotary Club and American Legion. The family would like to express their appreciation to everyone at Kroontje Health Care Center for their kindness throughout his stay. We would also like to thank a very special friend, Timothy Costello, for his amazing support and fellowship. A small family service will be held at McCoy Funeral Home on Friday, September 3, 2010.
