With much love and great sadness in our hearts, our family announces the passing of our beloved mother. Violet Anne Dalton Hartwell, 87, of Roanoke, Va., passed away peacefully on February 22, 2023.

Violet “Vi” was born on April 20, 1935, in Fries, Va. to two adoring parents, Allene Rosemond Sexton Dalton and Frederick Murel Dalton. She would be their only child, and as such, was rightfully doted upon.

The family soon moved to Radford, Va. where Violet exceled in countless activities as a child, and as an adolescent was a head cheerleader, a pageant queen and an excellent student.

She met her high school sweetheart HR “Snapper” Hartwell at RHS. They would date throughout high school and college and eventually marry in Charlottesville, Va. on August 14, 1956. At that time, Snapper was a student at University of Virginia, while Vi was pursuing her dream of becoming a nurse. Violet graduated from Lynchburg University in 1956 with a degree as a Registered Nurse.

The two soon embarked on a path of service to our nation as Snapper joined the Navy and became a Pilot. Their journey included living in Corpus Christie Texas, Chula Vista California and Pensacola Florida. In each state they welcomed a daughter. Tracey, Laurie and Mitzi. Being a mother was one of the most important aspects of Violets life, a role that gave her much joy and pride.

After retiring from the Navy, the family returned to Radford where Violet pursued her passion of nursing. She became the head adolescent nurse at St Albans Psychiatric Hospital in Radford, Va. She was absolutely admired and adored by her staff and patients alike.

Violet was predeceased by her mother, Allene, and father Frederick Dalton. She is survived by her three children, Tracey Lynn Hartwell Harris, Laurie Anne Hartwell, and Mitzi Suzanne Hartwell, the three grandchildren she loved dearly, Jordan Leigh Courtner, Taylor Michelle Courtner, and Zachary Ryan Hartwell, as well as her best friend of over 45 years, Susan H Cox.

Her loss will be deeply felt by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Our family will honor the wishes of Violet and will grieve the loss of our cherished Mother, Grandmother and friend intimately. We will assemble privately to celebrate her life as a family, united in love …as she wanted.
