Thurman Alfred Harris, 98, born July 23, 1911, in Indian Valley, Floyd County, Va., went to be with the Lord on March 31, 2010, at his daughter’s home in Bedford, Va.

He was predeceased by his wife of 76 years, Lettie Marie; a daughter, Mary Lou; a daughter-in-law, Opal Harris; son-in-law, Larry Fenzel; parents, Simon and Reona Smith Harris; and stepmother, Miranda Slusher Harris.

Left to cherish his memory are five children and spouses, David L. Harris, of Roanoke, Harlie and Reva Harris, of Martinsville, Charlie and Frances Harris, of Christiansburg, Betty and Mitch Ratliff, of Bedford, and Ella Fenzel, of Roanoke; 20 grandchildren; 42 greatgrandchildren; five greatgreat-grandchildren; two sisters, Treva Henley and Louise Lyle, of Radford; and a multitude of nieces and nephews.

Thurman served as an Elder in the Indian Valley Presbyterian Church for over 50 years serving in both the Abington and Montgomery Presbyteries. He taught Sunday school and served the Lord through all his adult life. He was an avid farmer and worked at the Lynchburg Foundry in Radford for 20 years, retiring in 1973.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 4, 2010, at Maberry Funeral Home, Floyd, Va. Officiating will be Pastor Tim Martin of Grace Church in Roanoke and Pastor Joe Cox of Indian Valley. Visitation will be open casket from noon until 6 p.m. with the family receiving friends and family from 6 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, April 3, 2010, at Maberry’s.

In lieu of flowers, Mr. Harris (in his will) requested that donations be sent to the Blue Ridge Women’s Center (CPC), 5034 Williamson Road, Roanoke, Va. 24012. Interment will be at the Captain George Quesenberry Cemetery, Indian Valley.
