Marjorie Clare Harper, 92, of Blacksburg, died early on Thursday, April 14, 2011, at Kroontje Health Care Center. Marjorie was born in Beaver, Pa., on March 8, 1919, to D. Lee Noss and Bessie P. McMillen. She graduated from the Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing in Pittsburgh, Pa., in 1940, then worked as a registered nurse at Magee-Women’s Hospital in Pittsburgh. Marjorie joined the Army Nurse Corps in 1942 as a member of the United States Army 27th General Hospital unit, which was formed by and from the University of Pittsburgh medical school. The unit was sent to the Pacific Theater and saw action in the Philippines and New Guinea. She was discharged as a 1st Lt. and went to work as a nurse at Deshon VA Hospital in Butler, Pa. It was there she met her husband-to-be, Edwin B. Harper. They opened and operated a Hallmark card and gift shop, Cards, Inc., in Coraopolis, Pa., for 26 years until their retirement in 1986. She was a member of Northside Presbyterian Church in Blacksburg and Greystone Presbyterian Church in Coraopolis (now the Presbyterian Church of Coraopolis). Marjorie is preceded in death by her husband, Edwin B. Harper; her brothers, Robert D. Noss and Frederick L. Noss; and her sister, Janet E. Green. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Bruce and Heidi Harper; three grandchildren, Andrew, Daniel, and Matthew, all of Blacksburg, Va.; four nieces; and two nephews. Graveside Services will conducted at 2 p.m. on Monday, April 18, 2011, in the Coraopolis Cemetery, Coraopolis, Pa. A Memorial Service and visitation will be held on April 30, 2011, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Northside Presbyterian Church, Blacksburg, Va. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Memorial Fund at Northside Presbyterian Church, 1017 Progress St., Blacksburg, VA 24060.
