Ruth Emma Gumm Harmon, 85, of Christiansburg, Va., passed away Saturday, April 17, 2010, at Montgomery Regional Hospital. Mrs. Harmon grew up in Mt. Airy, North Carolina.

She later attended Radford University and graduated with honors in only three years; later she earned a master’s degree in history from Radford. She wrote numerous articles, poems, and short stories. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC), Christiansburg Book Club and Our Saviour Lutheran Church. She taught for Montgomery County Public Schools in Christiansburg for 30 years.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Wirt Gumm, and her second husband, Marvin Harmon. She is survived by sisters, Nora Smith and husband, Bob, and Lorena Holland. She is also survived by sons, Richard Gumm, and Alan Harman and wife, Erika; granddaughter, Michele Eberhardt and husband, Mark; grandson, Aaron Harman; greatgrandsons, David and Justin Amato.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 21, 2010, at Horne Funeral Service. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 22, 2010, at Our Saviour Lutheran Church. Interment to follow in Jacksonville Cemetery, Floyd, Va.
