Fred Donald Harkrader, 73, of Christiansburg, Va., passed away on Tuesday, August 11, 2009, at Montgomery Regional Hospital. Don’s love for hunting, fishing and the out of doors lead him to open both Harkrader Marine and Custom Gun Shop, which remained in business for 40 years. His passion was movies and he established the first video store in the New River Valley. He will be sadly missed by his Labrodoodle, Skyler; and his constant companion in his last months, his cat, Alice. Surviving are his family, R.R. Harkrader Jr., Paul Douglas Harkrader Jr., Dr. James Colin Harkrader, Brown Peery Harkrader Jr., Sam R. Harkrader, Daphne McNiel, Lois Epperly, Dorothy Meredith, and Ray Wimmer; his step mother, Gertrude Harkrader, special friends, Paul Stubblefield, Mike Dickerson, Dianne Bourne, Leane Charett, Charles Wall, Joe Draper and Dean Sowers; and his caregivers, Deborah Daugherty and Nancy Hunter. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Harry McCoy. A memorial service will be held 10 a.m. on Saturday, August 29, 2009, at the graveside in Sunset Cemetery conducted by the Rev. Richard Gilbert. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Christiansburg Fire Department, 190 Depot Street, Christiansburg, Va. 24073 or to the Christiansburg Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 176, Christiansburg, Va. 24068. The Harkrader family is in the care of Horne Funeral and Cremation Service, Christiansburg, Va.
