Hammond, Jr., Charles Samuel
Charles Samuel Hammond, Jr., 89, was called home by Our Heavenly Father on October 9, 2012. He was born May 30, 1923, in Orleans, Mass. At age 14, he had the good fortune to meet and fall in love with Barbara Coup Swift. They married February 3, 1944, and had 65 wonderful years together. Although having lived in North Carolina, Florida, and Virginia, he always remained a Cape Cod Yankee. Charlie was a World War II veteran, having served in the Navy from 1942 to 1948. He worked as a design engineer for Western Electric until he retired in Winston-Salem, N.C. in 1983. He was a life member of the Amity Masonic Lodge in Danvers, Mass. His many interests included flying a seaplane and building model airplanes, fire engines and wooden ships. He was also an amateur photographer and enjoyed sailing his Hobie Cat on Lake Norman. Left to cherish his memory are daughters, Joanne H. Yaun(David), Marilyn H. Mclnnis (Gary, deceased), and Paula H. Shaw (Bruce). Grandchildren include David (Jennifer) Yaun, Brian (Dawn) Yaun, Kathryn (Robert) Stockland, Sheri Mclnnis and Dawn (Brian) Basham. He is also survived by his great-grandchildren, Karah and David Yaun, Brynn and Mia Yaun, and Amber and Meagan Basham; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to extend special thanks to Mary Ann Harris, Juanita and Kim Gambill and Francis Mullins of Comfort Care Senior Home, along many other caregivers for their loving care of and devotion to Charlie. Donations may be made in his honor to Carilion Hospice of the NRV with our grateful thanks. A memorial service will be conducted at Blacksburg Baptist Church at 2:30 p.m. on October 20, 2012, with Tommy McDearis officiating. A reception will be held in the fellowship hall following the service.
