Emma Louise Lilly Hammel, 92, most recently of Blacksburg, loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, died Monday, December 8, 2008 at Montgomery Regional Hospital following a brief illness. She was predeceased by her husband of 60 years, Ross W. Hammel. Born in National, Md., Emma was one of six children of James R. and Emma Dieling Lilly. She is survived by daughter, Mary Jane Vinelli, of Indianapolis, Ind., daughter and son-in-law, Anna Grace (Anne) and Michael J. Martin. Also surviving are grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Daniel J. Martin and wife, Rebecca, and children, Zachary and Ceirra Martin, Lauren and Ezekiel Roberts, Robert R. Martin and wife, Kelley, and children Andrew and Lindsay, Laura J. Meyer and husband, Jeff, and child, Elizabeth, Ross C. Vinelli and wife, Kim, and children Tyler and Katie. Also surviving are numerous nieces, nephews, and special friends. A memorial mass will be held at Wednesday, December 10, 2008 at 10 a.m. in St. Mary’s Catholic Church at 1205 Old Mill Road, Blacksburg, with a reception to follow at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Blacksburg Interfaith Pantry, 505 Progress Street, Blacksburg, VA. 24060 or St. Mary’s Building Fund, 1205 Old Mill Road, Blacksburg, VA 24060. The family would like to thank Dr. Scott Boerth, Dr. Robert Solomon and Dr. Christine Jordan and the fourth floor nursing staff at Montgomery Regional Hospital.
