hale alice scottAlice Scott Hale, 88, passed away on Saturday, September 8, 2012, at Heritage Hall in Blacksburg. She was the loving wife of Edward Benton Hale, Professor Emeritus at Virginia Tech. She was preceded in death by her parents, Alanson Burl Scott and Susan James Scott; brothers, Dwight Scott, Alanson Burl Scott, Jr., Joseph Henry Scott; sisters, Helen Roberts McFatridge and Mary Lou Scott Steger. Alice was born in Williamson, W.Va. on September 10, 1923. Following family moves to Huntington, W.Va. and Pulaski, she married Edward B. Hale of Narrows. They subsequently lived in Pulaski, Nashville and Knoxville, Tenn. before settling in Blacksburg. Alice was a member of the DAR, Faculty Wives Club, BUMC Circle, Town and Country Garden Club, and several bridge clubs. She was an active member of the Blacksburg United Methodist Church. She is survived by Edward Benton Hale, her husband of 65 years; sons, Edward Benton (Ben) Hale Jr., Centreville, and John Franklin Hale of Blacksburg; daughter, Elizabeth (Betsy) Hale Cohen, Mableton, Ga.; grandsons, Brandon Michael Cohen, Marietta, Ga. and Chad Austin Cohen (Kemlee), Canton, Ga.; great-grandson, Davis Andrew Cohen, Canton, Ga.; and great-granddaughter to be; brother, William Harry Scott, Vero Beach, Fla. The family wishes to express their gratitude to her caretakers at home, Betty McQuillar, Vera Paradasie, Deborah Calloway, and Michelle McCann, and to the staff and management at Heritage Hall. Funeral Services will be conducted Wednesday, September 12, 2012 at 2 p.m. in the Blacksburg United Methodist Church with the Rev. Reggie Tuck officiating. Interment will follow in the Memorial Gardens of the New River Valley. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Blacksburg United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 931, Blacksburg, Va. 24060. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday evening at the McCoy Funeral Home, 150 Country Club Drive, SW, Blacksburg.
