Guthrie, Barbara Ohana

Barbara Jean Ohana Guthrie, 73, of Narrows, was born July 21, 1945 in Rocky Mount, NC and passed away on August 23, 2018 after a long illness at Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Rich Creek, VA.

She was a member of Brightwood Church of The Brethren in Madison County, VA. She is survived by her husband, Barry L Guthrie of Giles County, sons Matthew Christopher Guthrie of New Braintree, MA, Odgen Guthrie of Staunton, VA, daughters Virginika Futrell of Gray, GA, and Heidi Lawton of Alpharetta, GA; eight grandchildren, 3 step grandchildren and a sister Janice Schneider of Rocky Mount, NC.

Barbara taught earth science for 14 years in VA plus GED classes in industries and jails for Montgomery County, VA and New River Community College. She was the first Director of the Radford Teen Center, Director of the Literacy Volunteers of the New River Valley, and Director of the Giles County Retired and Senior Volunteer Program. In the early eighties she received a grant from William and Mary University as their first Chesapeake Bay Instructor and was the 5th runner-up in the nationwide Environmental Protection Program for Teacher of the Year.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, August 25, 2018 at 3:00 pm in the Kendall Funeral Home, 605 Snidow St. in Pembroke. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour before the services. Online condolences may be sent by visiting kendallfuneralhome.com.
