Grinstead, Myrtle Garrett

Myrtle Garrett Grinstead, 97, of Gastonia, formerly of Pulaski, VA, passed away on June 27, 2022, at Wellington House in Gastonia, NC. She was born May 13, 1925, in Hiawassee, GA, to the late Alfred Garrett and Christine Rought.

Myrtle was a member of First United Methodist Church in Gastonia, where she enjoyed participating in bible study, crafting, and volunteering with the Wednesday evening meals. She was an excellent cook, well known for her delicious rolls, fried chicken, and deviled eggs. She loved to bake cakes and cobblers, with too many favorites to name. Myrtle’s family will cherish their memories of her fantastic meals and fun cookouts at her house. Myrtle loved gardening (both vegetables and flowers) and enjoyed canning the fruits of her labor. Myrtle taught herself to sew. She became an excellent seamstress and made beautiful clothing for her family and friends. Myrtle learned to square dance in Virginia. She was very active with her group and continued to dance after moving to Gastonia.

She was a 50-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Pulaski Chapter #113, where she served as Worthy Matron in 1984-1985. She also was a member of Rebecca’s. Myrtle also was a life member of the Ladies of the VFW-Auxiliary #1184, as well as a life member of the DAV. She served as an assistant leader in cub scouts, assistant leader in girl scouts, and volunteered with the American Red Cross for 30 years. During her time with the American Red Cross, her duties included taking information while working at blood mobiles.

In addition to her parents, Myrtle was preceded in death by her husband, Charles M. Grinstead; sons, Barry M. and William F. Grinstead; and a brother, Benjamin Garrett. Myrtle is survived by her daughter, Minniejan Krenzer; daughter-in-law, Ivy Grinstead; grandchildren, Jonard Sygaco (Shugar), Jason Grinstead (Nikki), Josh Grinstead, Wesley Brown (Sandra), Jamie Brown, and Sara Coiro (Joseph); eleven great grandchildren, and an uncle, Jay Eller.

A memorial service was held Friday, July 1, 2022, at 3:00 pm at the South Chapel of Greene Funeral Service and Crematorium, 1503 S. York Rd., Gastonia, NC. The family received friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Family will have visitation, 2-3pm, on Saturday, July 23, 2022 at Highland Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Dublin, VA. Interment will be private.
