Griggs, Carvel Lee
Carvel Lee Griggs, 87, of Peterstown died unexpectedly on Sunday, November 18, 2018. Carvel was born in Wolf Creek, VA, the eldest son of Joseph Lee and Vivian Pearl Ferguson Griggs. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 64 years, Ellen Munsey Griggs, his parents and his sister-in-law Gaye Griggs.
Employed for 40 years by Hercules Powder Company, the Radford Army Ammunition Plant, Carvel retired as Materials Manager in 1992. Until recent years when his hearing declined, he was a dedicated member of the Red Sulphur Springs Church where he served as Building Fund Treasurer, Superintendent of the Sunday School and performed any other task that needed doing.
Carvel was a devoted father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He generously provided an endless number of cars and dirt bikes, installed a large pool to keep the kids close, and wrote more tuition checks than we can recall. He loved the Mountaineers and rooted for any team playing the Hokies.
Carvel is survived by his daughters Brenda and her husband, John Timmer of Midlothian, VA, Debbie and her husband Steve Ballard of Norfolk, VA, as well as grandchildren, Michelle and her husband Cary Nothnagel, Robin Williams and his fiancée April Habana, and Tia Williams; his great grandchildren, Truman, Trenton, Austin and Lucas, all of Midlothian, VA, and many grand cats and dogs. He is also survived by his siblings Judy Lewis and husband Norris of Christiansburg, VA, Bob Griggs, Faye Jones and her husband Giles, Jeanne Allen, all of Peterstown, and many nieces and nephews.
Well remembered for his attention to detail, Carvel was known for the perfect house and yard, the cleanest car, orderly closets and cupboards, tabletop accessories Velcro-ed down for precise placement, and never an errant leaf on the driveway or pool cover.
In the last 1.5 years of his life, when he was unable to safely live alone, Carvel was blessed to have his daughter, Brenda as his primary caretaker who devoted her life to him so that he could remain in his home. During his last earthly summer, the pool around which he and Ellen had delighted in entertaining while she was alive, was opened after many years of being shuttered. The laughter and activity of grandkids, friends and family around that pool gave him renewed energy and, just like the old days, he told the little ones to have all the fun they wanted with one rule, “…just don’t mess up my flowers!”
Carvel loved his family dearly, was adored by them and will be sorely missed.
