Gray, Peggy Arthur
Peggy Arthur Gray, of Blacksburg, VA died Friday March 30 2018, at Richfield Recovery and Care Center in Salem. She was a loving mother, sister and devoted and caring wife. Peggy was preceded in death by her husband Alfred Curtis Gray of Blacksburg, her parents Mr. and Mrs. John Jackson Arthur, and sister Patricia Arthur Beasley all of Radford.
She was a graduate of Radford High School and received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from Radford College. She started her teaching career at Claremont Elementary School in Pulaski. The majority of Peggy’s career was spent serving primarily as a second-grade teacher in Montgomery County Schools at Gilbert Linkous and Prices Fork Elementary Schools.
Peggy and husband Curtis were happy to spend their time raising their two sons, Andy and Ed . She returned to teaching in the mid-1980s. For years after her retirement , Peggy was warmly recognized and greeted by her former students all over Southwest Virginia.
Peggy enjoyed an active retirement by traveling with Curtis to visit family, gardening, cooking, shopping, sipping her daily coffees on the back porch, watching Virginia Tech sports, taking bus trips with Curtis to football bowl games, and spending quality family time with her sisters, nieces, nephews, sons, and their families. Peggy looked forward to high school reunions with her RHS classmates and spent free time meeting with her friends and serving in the Delta Kappa Gamma professional society. Peggy was also a regular attendee at Blacksburg Sports Club for many years, where she was awarded for her contributions to the club’s extensive photo archives.
Peggy is survived by her two sons, Andy Gray of Shiremanstown, PA and Ed Gray of Falls Church, VA; daughters-in law Courtney Gray and Natalie Gray; 5 grandchildren, Alexander, Sydney, Julia, Nicholas, and Kate; two sisters, Johnsey Viars and Jeanne Setzer both of Salem, VA; and many loving nieces, nephews and relatives.
The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 4 2018, at the McCoy Funeral Home, 150 Country Club Drive S.W. Blacksburg. Funeral services will be conducted 3:00 p.m. Thursday, April 5 2018, in the Luther Memorial Lutheran Church with the Rev. William King officiating. A graveside burial service will follow at Westview Cemetery at 723 East Roanoke Street in Blacksburg.
